Who Is Jarvis Johnson?
Jarvis as a husband and father

February 2, 2010

Jarvis is a visionary and community minded person.

As the Director of Phoenix Outreach Youth Center (POYC), he was always a “hands on” and “roll up the sleeves and work”  type of person.  I have seen him tutor, cook, drive a bus , or whatever was needed to serve the families who needed his help.

Jarvis would visit schools to make sure the kids of POYC were getting the attention they needed to thrive in the classroom.  He has provided college scholarships to kids.  On any given day you might see him rolling up his sleeves to organize a community cleanup.

Jarvis will go out of his way to show his commitment to people.

Jarvis proposed marriage to me by writing, “Charlene Will You Marry Me?” on his mortarboard cap during his graduation from Texas Southern University.  As a husband, Jarvis has been my rock and my support base.

He is deeply committed to his family.

As a father, Jarvis stresses education to our children and made sure they know he is always supportive of them.  He is such a proud father. He cheers at our son’s football and baseball games. He claps the  loudest at our  daughter’s recitals.

As Jarvis’ wife, I get to see the softer, gentler side of him.

I see what worries him at night.  I see the concern in his face, when a student tells him they don’ t know how they will
pay for college; when a senior citizen tells him she needs help raising her grandchildren; or when his sees an injustice being done to his  community.  But then I also get to see how hard he works until he makes a difference in the lives of that student, senior citizen and members of his community.
