Nearly 40,000 Americans are killed each year by firearms. Far too many of those are children. Like other forms of premature death, gun violence should be dealt with using public health tools. Unfortunately, Congress has prevented the CDC from conducting any meaningful research on gun violence for many years. This prohibition must be repealed. Without solid scientific data, members of Congress from both major parties are like doctors prescribing treatments without ever having examined the patient!
In addition, we need elected officials who understand that each type of gun violence requires its own solution. A measure designed to prevent suicides will not prevent mass shootings, accidents, or regular homicides, and vice versa. Each of these social ills has different causes and requires different treatments. I believe we can protect our children from all of these dangers while still respecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners.
